Ion Exchange Resins
Ion exchange resin is an insoluble matrix fabricated from an organic polymer substrate. The trapping of ions occurs with concomitant releasing of other ions. They have a multitude of functions such as in water softening, demineralization, purification, chromatographic separation etc.
Ion exchange is a reversible chemical reaction where in an ion from the solution is exchanges for a similarly charged ion attached to an immobile solid particle. Generally, these solids ion exchange particles are usually some synthetically produced organic resins.
Ion exchange resins are classified into cation exchange resins, which carries a positive charged ion and anion exchange resins, which carries negatively charged ions.
